Diagnoses of genera of South East Asia: Genus: Habrocestum. Recent
work has indicated that many species in this genus were not congeneric with
the type species, and a number of transfers have already taken place. However
we have three species all correctly placed. The carapace is broad but still
longer than wide. Behind the rear eyes it is rounded behind, and at the front
is slightly flared. The abdomen is smaller than the cephalothorax and is a broad,
almost pear-shaped, oval. For the male H. orientale from Vietnam, the
eye field is brown, lighter in the middle and darker round the eyes. The thorax
is orange, darkening towards the margin. It is beige coloured with yellow and
grey spots, the latter forming chevrons towards the rear. Legs I and II are
dark orange with yellow coxae, whilst legs III and IV are lighter and yellowish.
Distribution: The main centre of Habrocestum proper now appears
to be the Mediterranean region, with a few species recorded eastwards to S.
China and Hong Kong. Murphy & Murphy 2000: 344. By courtesy of the Authors'
