"Etymology. Named in honor of the late Witold Pilecki (1901-1948),
Polish cavalry officer before World War II, during Nazi German occupation of
Poland volunteered for Polish Resistance (Armia Krajowa) an almost suicidal
mission of penetrating Auschwitz Concentration camp. Deliberaterily letting
himself be arested, on Setpember 21st 1940 was incarcerated in the Camp (Camp
Number 4859) where has organized network of Resistance, uniting spontaneously
but chaotically sprouting resistance groups. Escaping from the Camp in the Spring
of 1943, he wrote detailed report on Camp, forwarded by the Hedquaters of the
AK to the West; the first detailed report on what was Auschwitz Camp. After
the War active in military intelligence for Polish Emigree organization, caught,
