Benedykt Dybowski

1833-1930

Biologists and physician, professor in Universities in Warsaw (1862-1864), later Lwow (Lviv, Lemberg) (1884-1906 - when he retired). He studied biology and medicin at Universities of Dorpat, Wroclav (Breslau) where cooperated closely with another Author on Siberian and local spiders - E. Grube, and Berlin, where received PhD. As a lecturer of biology he lectured in 1862 on theory of Darwin, the first in Poland. For sympaties for Polish Uprising in 1863 sentenced in 1864 by Rusian Tsarist Government for hard labors in Siberia, where spent 13 years, part time as physician. He used that time for collecting Siberian fauna, together with other Polish prisoners like Czerski and Godlewski, who were pioniers of study of that area. Released from hard labors, after 2 yeas in Poland, returned in 1878 to ... Kamchatka (extreme East North of Russia) as govenmental physician, to continue collecting fauna of Siberia and Kamtschatka until 1883. His spiders collections were studied and described by W. Kulczynski. Was active as a scientist until death, at the age 97.
