Diagnoses of genera of South East Asia: Genus: Heliophanus.
Although Heliophanus is one of the largest salticid genera and has a
widespread distribution, it was only in 1992 that it was recorded from our area
for the first time. The size of our species conform to the norm, but some African
species can be rather larger. In general, Heliophanus species are dark
brown to black in colour, often with a metallic sheen. The shortish, stocky
legs are much lighter in colour, sometimes being bright yellow, and contrast
markedly with the dark body. The pedipalps of females are usually light coloured
and sometimes even bright yellow. There is often a white narrow band running
along the anterior edge of the abomen and often two smallish white spots set
transversely across the abdomen near the spinnerets. The cephalothorax is moderately
high and, in plan, is an elongate, broad oval, widest towards the rear and slightly
truncated at the front. The stoutish abdomen is also elongated, broad oval,
rounded anteriorly and somewhat tapering posteriorly. The spinnerets are small
and located at the extreme tip of the abdomen. There are a few spines on the
legs. Characteristic of most males of Heliophanus are the large femoral
apophyses on the palps. These are sufficiently large to be seen using a hand
lens in the field.
Distribution: The centre for Heliophanus seems to be from Europe
to Africa, but some species spread eastwards, in a roughly parallel band, from
Europe and the Mediterranean through Asia to China. Our species appear on the
southernmost edge of this band in south-west China.Murphy & Murphy 2000:
